Predicting Stock Prices using Permutation Decision Trees and Strategic Trailing

In this paper, we explore the application of Permutation Decision Trees (PDT) and strategic trailing for predicting stock market movements and executing profitable trades in the Indian stock market. We focus on high-frequency data using 5-minute candlesticks for the top 50 stocks listed in the NIFTY 50 index and Forex pairs such as XAUUSD and EURUSD. We implement a trading strategy that aims to buy stocks at lower prices and sell them at higher prices, capitalizing on short-term market fluctuations. Due to regulatory constraints in India, short selling is not considered in our strategy. The model incorporates various technical indicators and employs hyperparameters such as the trailing stop-loss value and support thresholds to manage risk effectively. We trained and tested data on a 3 month dataset provided by Yahoo Finance. Our bot based on Permutation Decision Tree achieved a profit of 1.1802\% over the testing period, where as a bot based on LSTM gave a return of 0.557\% over the testing period and a bot based on RNN gave a return of 0.5896\% over the testing period. All of the bots outperform the buy-and-hold strategy, which resulted in a loss of 2.29\%.


Predicting Stock Market Crash with Bayesian Generalised Pareto Regression

This paper develops a Bayesian Generalised Pareto Regression (GPR) model to forecast extreme losses in Indian equity markets, with a focus on the Nifty 50 index. Extreme negative returns, though rare, can cause significant financial disruption, and accurate modelling of such events is essential for effective risk management. Traditional Generalised Pareto Distribution (GPD) models often ignore market conditions; in contrast, our framework links the scale parameter to covariates using a log-linear function, allowing tail risk to respond dynamically to market volatility. We examine four prior choices for Bayesian regularisation of regression coefficients: Cauchy, Lasso (Laplace), Ridge (Gaussian), and Zellner's g-prior. Simulation results suggest that the Cauchy prior delivers the best trade-off between predictive accuracy and model simplicity, achieving the lowest RMSE, AIC, and BIC values. Empirically, we apply the model to large negative returns (exceeding 5%) in the Nifty 50 index. Volatility measures from the Nifty 50, S&P 500, and gold are used as covariates to capture both domestic and global risk drivers. Our findings show that tail risk increases significantly with higher market volatility. In particular, both S&P 500 and gold volatilities contribute meaningfully to crash prediction, highlighting global spillover and flight-to-safety effects. The proposed GPR model offers a robust and interpretable approach for tail risk forecasting in emerging markets. It improves upon traditional EVT-based models by incorporating real-time financial indicators, making it useful for practitioners, policymakers, and financial regulators concerned with systemic risk and stress testing.


Understanding the Impact of News Articles on the Movement of Market Index: A Case on Nifty 50

In the recent past, there were several works on the prediction of stock price using different methods. Sentiment analysis of news and tweets and relating them to the movement of stock prices have already been explored. But, when we talk about the news, there can be several topics such as politics, markets, sports etc. It was observed that most of the prior analyses dealt with news or comments associated with particular stock prices only or the researchers dealt with overall sentiment scores only. However, it is quite possible that different topics having different levels of impact on the movement of the stock price or an index. The current study focused on bridging this gap by analysing the movement of Nifty 50 index with respect to the sentiments associated with news items related to various different topic such as sports, politics, markets etc. The study established that sentiment scores of news items of different other topics also have a significant impact on the movement of the index.


Gated recurrent neural network with TPE Bayesian optimization for enhancing stock index prediction accuracy

ABSTRACT The recent advancement of deep learning architectures, neural networks, and the combination of abundant financial data and powerful computers are transforming finance, leading us to develop an advanced method for predicting future stock prices. However, the accessibility of investment and trading at everyone's fingertips made the stock markets increasingly intricate and prone to volatility. The increased complexity and volatility of the stock market have driven demand for more models, which would effectively capture high volatility and non-linear behavior of the different stock prices. The aim is to improve the prediction accuracy of the next day's closing price of the NIFTY 50 index, a prominent Indian stock market index, using TPE-GRNN. A combination of eight influential factors is carefully chosen from fundamental stock data, technical indicators, crude oil price, and macroeconomic data to train the models for capturing the changes in the price of the index with the factors of the broader economy. Single-layer and multi-layer TPE-GRNN models have been developed. The models' performance is evaluated using standard matrices like R The analysis of models' performance reveals the impact of feature selection and hyperparameter optimization (HPO) in enhancing stock index price prediction accuracy. The results show that the MAPE of our proposed TPE-LSTM method is the lowest (best) with respect to all the previous models for stock index price prediction. Introduction The stock markets are complex systems where traders and investors can participate in publicly traded companies for buying and selling shares, hoping to profit from price fluctuations. Access to trading and investment at the fingertips of every interested person is increasingly making the stock market further intricate, noisy, and unpredictable. All the stock market participants are asking for higher profits and lower risk. Stock price or stock index price prediction is undeniably the upper choice for investors and financial analysts due to its extensive implementation area and significant effect on profit and loss.


A Comparative Study of Hierarchical Risk Parity Portfolio and Eigen Portfolio on the NIFTY 50 Stocks

Portfolio optimization has been an area of research that has attracted a lot of attention from researchers and financial analysts. Designing an optimum portfolio is a complex task since it not only involves accurate forecasting of future stock returns and risks but also needs to optimize them. This paper presents a systematic approach to portfolio optimization using two approaches, the hierarchical risk parity algorithm and the Eigen portfolio on seven sectors of the Indian stock market. The portfolios are built following the two approaches to historical stock prices from Jan 1, 2016, to Dec 31, 2020. The portfolio performances are evaluated on the test data from Jan 1, 2021, to Nov 1, 2021. The backtesting results of the portfolios indicate that the performance of the HRP portfolio is superior to that of its Eigen counterpart on both training and test data for the majority of the sectors studied.


Forecasting NIFTY 50 benchmark Index using Seasonal ARIMA time series models

This paper analyses how Time Series Analysis techniques can be applied to capture movement of an exchange traded index in a stock market. Specifically, Seasonal Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) class of models is applied to capture the movement of Nifty 50 index which is one of the most actively exchange traded contracts globally [1]. A total of 729 model parameter combinations were evaluated and the most appropriate selected for making the final forecast based on AIC criteria [8]. NIFTY 50 can be used for a variety of purposes such as benchmarking fund portfolios, launching of index funds, exchange traded funds (ETFs) and structured products. The index tracks the behaviour of a portfolio of blue chip companies, the largest and most liquid Indian securities and can be regarded as a true reflection of the Indian stock market [2].
